Vic: Firefighters assessing bushfires from air
MELBOURNE, Feb 2 AAP - Country Fire Authority (CFA) aircraft are assessing fires burning
in Gippsland after a weekend of fierce blazes that ripped through homes and bushland.
A CFA spokesman said aircraft were sent at first light on Monday over the Delburn complex
fire to review the blazes, which are still burning out of control but are close to being
contained.
Some fire activity in Mirboo North overnight will be viewed from the air, the spokesman
said, but firefighters were not expecting extreme activity due to cooler conditions.
"They've been concentrating on blacking out and basically consolidating the work that's
been done over the past few days," the spokesman told AAP.
Fires east of the Delburn complex are still burning near the township of Licola and
five fires are burning out of control in the northeast - two near the goldfields town
of Yackandandah, near Wodonga, one at nearby Kergunyah, one southeast of the Hume Weir
town of Tallangatta and another at Freeburgh, near Bright.
Although there is no total fire ban in Victoria on Monday, fire conditions remain extreme,
particularly north of the Great Dividing Range, where most centres are expecting top temperatures
in the high 30s to low 40s.

Bye Bye Birdie
Byline: MARK FELDMAN
Edition: Daily
Section: Features
Type: News
How I was invited to a world premiere in LA last week of a digitally restored print of one of my all-time childhood movie musicals, Bye Bye Birdie, I'll never discover.
Ann-Margret's rendition of the title song still resonates deeply in my consciousness. And no doubt the link between the travel industry and the movie's title was somehow planted in my mind at the tender age of three when the film premiered.
The movie parodies Elvis Presley's draft into the US Army and the decision to travel to a small town in the Midwest to plant one last kiss on an innocent school girl to be televised on one of the most popular variety shows in the US at the time. A multitude of factors must all come together to create the desired outcome, which as fellow devotees of the movies already know is never an easy path.
Thus when Rachel Ron, aged 77, contacted me two weeks prior to Pessah, to ask what she described as a simple question, a silent alarm immediately went off in my head.
Rachel and her husband had purchased tickets to fly to Melbourne, Australia over a month earlier, planning to arrive 10 days prior to the commencement of the Passover holiday. Their daughter and, more importantly, their grandchildren resided in Melbourne, and for this holiday it was decided the grandparents would fly to them.
When making the reservation, their travel consultant warned them immediately that they needed a visa to travel to Australia. In fact most nationalities, be they US or UK passport holders - and certainly Israeli passport holders - are required to apply for a visa.
Let's be frank - with the advent of the Internet, common sense would assume that applying for visas is a far easier task today than the antiquated format of filling out lengthy forms. Both Australia, and to be honest, the US, prove this adage incorrect.
To obtain an Australian visa, one must be very clear on the reasons for one's potential journey and the entire form must be crystal clear. More and more embassies in Israel prefer that visa applications be handled by a central authority, and the largest such conveyor of visa applications is the Israel Tourist & Travel Agents Association.
The Association's Managing Director Yossi Fatael, has made the process of applying for a visa - be it India or Australia, China or the United States - efficient and professional.
The Rons' travel consultant downloaded the correct forms, sent them to her client, gave them clear instructions on what to return - photos, documentation etc - and told them their visas would take approximately 14 working days to process.
So when I was told by the Rons that 21 working days had transpired, small beads of sweat erupted on my forehead. However, a quick call to the Association relieved me. I was informed that there had been a backlog but that in the next two days their visas would be issued and the passports sent back to the travel agency's office.
As they were not flying out until the following Saturday night, and it was only Tuesday morning, Mrs. Ron was extremely grateful for my optimistic words. It was the last time she would be so grateful.
The next morning, someone was kind enough to call me to say the Rons' passports had been collected from the Australian embassy in Tel Aviv and on Thursday morning they would be sent via Taxi Aviv to the travel agent's office.
Surprise, surprise, somehow the satchel of passports, visas and other sundry items of the Association never made it to the Taxi Aviv office.
This satchel contained dozens of passports, with visas not only to Australia, but to the US and China. Clients from offices throughout Israel were affected. Business clients trying to squeeze one last meeting in the US before Pessah and Easter had no travel documents; leisure clients wishing to join their organized tour down the Yangtze River in China were set ashore, and the Ron's fervent desire to spend Pessah Down Under was drifting farther away.
Larger than a reticule, yet smaller than a duffle bag, it was unclear if the satchel of documents had been lost or stolen. Security cameras were searched; no clear answer emerged.
On Friday morning I personally broke the bad news to the Rons that they would not be flying out Saturday night, that the police were involved, that dozens of passports were 'missing' and that serious alarms had been set off throughout Tel Aviv. They needed new passports, as well as new visas.
Devotees of the movies know that sometimes a small miracle is needed. In the case of Bye Bye Birdie, a pill is slipped into the ballerina's food, forcing her to dance at a frenzied pace. That this dancer, Karel Shimoff, was only 15 years old and my cousin only added to my belief that anything is possible.
Yossi Fatael needed no magic pill. He had Association representatives meet all those who needed new Israeli passports early Sunday morning at the Interior Ministry in order to issue emergency passports. He somehow cajoled and convinced all the Tel Aviv-based embassies involved to issue new visas early Monday morning.
He instructed every single travel agency involved to reissue new airline tickets, rebook any missed hotel reservations and to get everyone on a plane that Monday evening, arriving for Pessah with time to spare. All extra expenses would be reimbursed by the Association.
The Rons were incredulous that it was truly happening; their tepid thanks were quickly followed by inquiries of compensation. No matter, I thought, they were blameless throughout the entire process. Little did they know how much was done to enable them to make their trip a reality!
Sitting down to Seder the following week, as I retold our people's path to freedom, a half-smile crossed my face. Too often we are simply unaware of what one man has to do to make someone's personal freedom a reality.

VIC:Telco watchdog receives 167,955 complaints
MELBOURNE, Dec 3 AAP - Australians made a whopping 167,955 complaints to the telecommunications
watchdog in 2009/10 including a surge in grievances about global roaming charges.
The most common complaints to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) related
to billings and payments, and involved poor explanations by phone and internet companies
about product plans, confusing advertising and poor customer service.
However, there was an overall five per cent decrease in new complaints in 2009/10,
but the number of complaints remained far higher than they were from 2006/07 and 2007/08.
"By any measure 167,955 new complaints is too high," Ombudsman Simon Cohen told reporters
on Friday.
"I am perhaps most concerned that many simple complaints come to the ombudsman that
should be easily resolved by telephone and internet companies.
"While our new complaints has decreased the number of investigations has increased."
There was an 80 per cent increase this year in consumers suffering "bill shock" in
relation to global roaming charges, when they received massive unexpected bills totalling
hundreds or thousands of dollars after using their phone or the internet overseas.
"We think that's a particular area where giving good information to consumers about
that would reduce the prospect of them ending up with unexpected charges," Mr Cohen said.

Fed: Cyclist wins $175,000 in defamation case
MELBOURNE, April 27 AAP - Olympic cyclist Mark French has been awarded $175,000 in
damages after he sued the Herald and Weekly Times for defamation.
The former junior world champion was banned from cycling for two years in 2004 and
also suffered a lifetime Olympics suspension because of doping offences, but was cleared
on appeal the following year.
Mr French, 25, sued the Herald and Weekly Times (HWT) for damages in the Victorian
Supreme Court over two articles published in the Herald Sun newspaper in August 2004,
which he claims labelled him a disgraced drug cheat.
On Tuesday, Justice David Beach awarded Mr French $175,000 in damages, plus costs.
Outside court his solicitor, Michael Main, said Mr French was happy with the outcome.
"He was very relieved that the case was over and that he had been vindicated," he told reporters.
Mr French had also successfully sued radio station Triple M in 2008 for defamation
after he was described on air as a "dirty, stinking, dobbing cyclist".
In that case, he was awarded $350,000 in damages, plus costs.

Fed: Outspoken senator learns moderation
CANBERRA, Dec 14 AAP - Barnaby Joyce is learning to hold his tongue and moderate his
sometimes outspoken views after a talking to by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.
Senator Joyce, the opposition's new finance spokesman, was not commenting on his favorite
topic - climate change - when quizzed on Monday about developments at the UN summit in
Copenhagen.
"That is a very good question for (opposition climate action spokesman) Greg Hunt," he said.
When pushed further to comment, Senator Joyce said: "I'm a very responsible person
and I'm not going to go into Greg Hunt's portfolio."
Mr Abbott used the first meeting of his shadow ministry last week to remind his frontbench
of the need for discipline.
Senator Joyce, an outspoken opponent of Labor's emissions trading scheme, also backed
away from his earlier comments about banning Chinese sovereign investment in the Australian
resources sector, and a warning of a global economic meltdown if the United States failed
to meet its debt obligations.
Asked whether he needed to curb his commentary on such issues, he said: "Well, of course I do."

FED: Parkinson's suffers playing their way to better health
By Danny Rose, Medical Writer
SYDNEY, Feb 10 AAP - Parkinson's disease sufferers who play computer games have "fun",
says an Australian professor who now wants to see whether they can also improve how sure
they are on their feet.
A group of seven older people with and without the degenerative condition took part
in a NSW pilot project, and they were put through an almost daily regime of playing the
Nintendo Wii.
The home entertainment device is controlled through arm movements, while a Wii Fit
"board" was also added requiring the seated users to interact with on-screen objects using
their feet.
Southern Cross University Associate Professor Rick van der Zwan said the initial findings
were positive, as it showed the older people were prepared to embrace an unfamiliar technology.
"Lots of older people when you talk to them about computer games they think about shooting
up spaceships ... they're not so interested," Dr van der Zwan says.
"They are quite prepared to try it as a therapy or potential form of treatment, but
when they do they are quite surprised.
"They find it fun ... not a chore like taking your blood pressure, it becomes an engaging
part of their routine and that's exactly what we want."
People with Parkinson's disease develop it in their 50s and 60s and it affects coordination
and vision. They suffer falls at nine times the rate of those without the condition.
Dr van der Zwan said computer games could offer these people a safe and enjoyable way
to boost their activity levels without leaving their home, or even their chair.
He is now seeking to recruit 15 or so more research participants to broaden the study
and allow a detailed examination of the expected health benefits, such as improvements
in core body strength and posture.
"If this turns out to be a good thing, for people in rural and remote locations in
particular, it could provide them with a mechanism for treating themselves, to help keep
them on their feet," Dr van der Zwan says.
The study is open to people in Sydney and Coffs Harbour but also those in rural NSW.

NSW: Taufahema's seven years for cop killing ridiculous: father
By Kim Christian
SYDNEY, Dec 13 AAP - The father of murdered police officer Glenn McEnallay said today
he was "disgusted" over the seven-year minimum sentence handed down to one of four men
implicated in the killing.
Senior Constable McEnallay was shot four times in the chest and head after he pursued
a stolen car at Hillsdale in Sydney's south-east in March 2002.
He died of his wounds in hospital a week later.
Four men were jailed over the killing, including Sione Penisini, who is serving 36
years after pleading guilty to pulling the trigger.
Brothers John and Motekiai Taufahema were both convicted of murder and sentenced to
maximum terms of 24 years in jail, but had their convictions quashed on appeal.
They argued successfully that they had not been party to a joint criminal enterprise.
After retrials were ordered, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) outraged police
and the McEnallay family by accepting guilty pleas from both men to the lesser charge
of manslaughter.
John Taufahema, 25, was sentenced in the NSW Supreme Court today to a maximum sentence
of 11 years dating back to March 2005, and will be eligible for parole in March 2012.
John Taufahema is the last of the four to be sentenced over the death after his brother,
Motekiai, was given the same sentence in August this year.
Meli Lagi was acquitted of murder but jailed for 10 years for firearms offences.
In sentencing Taufahema today, Justice Michael Grove said he had run from the car with
a loaded rifle.
"The accused admits he was complicit in the act that caused Constable McEnallay's death,"
Justice Grove told the court.
"His complicity arises from his participation in a joint criminal enterprise to possess
the revolvers."
He said while Pensini's firing of a revolver caused Mr McEnallay's death, Taufahema
had contemplated the possibility that one of the four might fire a gun.
Outside the court, Mr McEnallay's father Bob McEnallay said he was "bloody disgusted"
with the DPP for accepting a manslaughter plea.
"They'd already tried him on murder once and convicted him and a jury could have done
the same again," he told reporters.
"If not we'd have still ended up with manslaughter, but they just took the easy way
out and that's the most annoying part of it."
Mr McEnallay said criminal enterprise laws should be changed because today's result
was "an absolute joke".
"They all had loaded pistols, they were all in company with one another ... but all
this stuff's got swept under the carpet," Mr McEnallay said.
"There's just no respect for Glenn or the loss of Glenn's life or for every serving
police officer in NSW, it's just a bloody disgrace."
He said today's court appearance ended a frustrating period for himself and his family.
"I've been there four times and read that (victim impact) statement, I can't do it any more."

NSW: Debnam too risky for people of NSW: Watkins
SYDNEY, Dec 31 AAP - A new poll revealing 75 per cent of voters want the NSW opposition
leader dumped shows the community's "growing dislike" for Peter Debnam, Deputy Premier
John Watkins says.
"The poll's going to fluctuate between now and polling days and most things change,
(but) the one common thread, it seems, is the growing unpopularity of Peter Debnam," Mr
Watkins told reporters today.
The Galaxy poll, conducted for The Sunday Telegraph, also showed more than one-third
- 38 per cent - of the voters who doubted Mr Debnam's ability were Liberal supporters.
Mr Watkins said Mr Debnam was too risky for NSW voters.
"One thing seems to be very sure and that's the growing dislike the community has for
Peter Debnam," he said.
"He's too big a risk for the people of this state.
"I think they've listened to his plan to sack 20,000 public sector workers, they're
worried about what impact that will have on frontline services for families."
But Mr Watkins admitted the election, due on March 24, would be tough for the NSW Labor Party.
"Anyone involved in politics knows that the next election in March is going to be the
toughest we've ever had," he said.
The poll comes ahead of a month-long road tour by Mr Debnam to win over voters.
The Coalition needs to win 17 seats to govern, representing a swing of more than 10 per cent.
Comment was being sought from Mr Debnam.

WA: Man in court over hate calls to Jewish groups
PERTH, Aug 22 AAP - A man accused of making hate calls to Jewish groups in Perth during
the peak of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel has appeared in court.
Tadeusz Edmund Krysiak, 41, appeared in Perth Magistrate's Court today for allegedly
using a telephone to make abusive, harassing and anti-Semitic calls to Jewish community
groups in Perth.
He was charged with four counts of using a phone service to harass.
Krysiak was not required to enter a plea and was granted bail on the condition he does
not attempt to contact or approach any Jewish community centres or places of worship.
The matter was adjourned until November 13.
Krysiak's arrest has prompted police to warn others about considering any unlawful
and religiously-motivated activity.
"All reports received by WA Police that are motivated by unlawful religious or racial
behaviour will be treated seriously, and dealt with promptly, to ensure police maintain
the trust and strengthen the good relationships that exist with all religious and cultural
groups in this state," police said in a statement.
Krysiak's arrest came after police received complaints that several interest and welfare
groups associated with the Jewish Centre in WA had received hate calls.

Senate Passes Ban on Puppy Mills.

By Brandi Grissom and Thanh Tan
The so-called puppy mill bill is one step closer to becoming law after the Senate tonight approved a less stringent version of the measure that would regulate cat and dog breeders.
Under the bill, those who breed 20 or more cats and dogs would face licensing and regulation requirements for the first time in Texas. The Senate approved HB 1451 tonight by a vote of 22-9.
Animal rights activists say the bill is needed to prevent puppy mills, where breeders often leave dogs in squalid conditions and force them to give birth to multiple litters for the sake of turning a profit. Animal lovers are attuned to the issue because many pets are now sold direct to consumers on the internet. Under current laws, there is nothing that requires those facilities to "provide a minimum standard of care." Under HB 1451, they would be required to do so.
On the other side, some pet breeders are opposed to the bill because they believe the increased cost associated with licensing requirements could put them out of business. That includes paying licensing fees and increased veterinary bills because of strict health care guidelines under the bill, including annual visits for each animal.
Three attempts to amend the bill were tabled before its passage. Sen. Troy Fraser, R-Horseshoe Bay, tried to increase the minimum number of animals to fall under the licensing requirements from 20 to 60. It failed after the bill's sponsor, Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, said that higher figure likely meant "you would genuinely have a puppy mill, which is what we're trying to prevent." Another tabled amendment would have stripped the mandate requiring breeders to offer veterinary care for their animals at least once a year.
A final amendment proposed allowing breeders to euthanize their own animals, if necessary, under the age of six months. Whitmire allowed the change to the bill, citing concerns from farmers who do not want to pay veterinary fees.
Of course, at least one lawmaker couldn't get through the debate without throwing in a pun or two about the sponsor's efforts to protect man's best friend.
"I know this has been 'rough' on you," Sen. Carlos Uresti, D-San Antonio, said to Whitmire. "I just want to thank you for putting a 'leash' on this issue."
The measure now returns to the House for approval of the changes made in the Senate.

Research and Markets: Mauritius - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Forecasts - 2011.
DUBLIN -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/9c1834/mauritius_teleco) has announced the addition of the "Mauritius - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Forecasts" report to their offering.
One of Africa's most developed telecom and digital media markets
This annual report provides a comprehensive overview of trends and developments in Mauritius's telecommunications market.
Convergence (voice/data, fixed/wireless/mobile). The island nation of Mauritius sports some of the best telecommunication market indicators in Africa and has been the first with many innovations: Africa's first cellular system was launched here in 1989, the first commercial 3G mobile service in 2004, the world's first nationwide WiMAX wireless broadband network in 2005, and one of Africa's first IPTV services in 2006.
With strong tourism and financial services sectors, Mauritius's economy has been hit harder by the global economic crisis than many other African countries. However, IMF forecasts predict that after a dip to around 1.5%, annual GDP growth will return to levels between 4% and 5% again in 2010/11.
The incumbent telco, Mauritius Telecom (MT) has been partially privatised and all sectors of the market are open to competition. Served by a modern, digital fixed-line network, two fibre optic submarine cables for international connectivity, three mobile networks, various broadband and other service providers, Mauritius is successfully pursuing a policy to make telecommunications the fifth pillar of its economy and to become a regional telecom hub with Singapore as a role model.
At more than 90% penetration, the mobile market is approaching saturation. Two GSM-based networks - Orange (MT in partnership with France Telecom) and Emtel, operated by Millicom International - are competing with a CDMA2000 service operated by Mahanagar (MTML), which is also the country's second fixed-line operator.
The highest growth rates are currently seen in the broadband sector, where HSPA and EV-DO based 3G mobile services are competing with fixed-line DSL and other wireless broadband offerings, including WiMAX. FttC and FttH rollouts are in progress which have already brought 100Mb/s connections to businesses, with nearly nationwide coverage planned for 2015. The landing of a second international submarine fibre optic cable has brought prices down further in a broadband market that was already one of Africa's most developed.
Initiated in early 2011, the investigation of possible anti-competitive behaviour by MT in the DSL and IPTV sector has the potential to shake up not only the broadband access market but also the market for digital media and entertainment.

Google to launch online music service.
Internet giant Google could launch an online music service as early as Tuesday to rival Amazon s "cloud" service, which allows users to store digital music online, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Citing unnamed sources, the neswspaper said on Monday that Google, like Amazon, has yet to secure licenses from the major record companies, and would limit users to a "streaming mode" to prevent piracy.
The new service, expected to be announced at an annual developers conference in San Francisco, would initially be launched in a testing phase, only becoming accessible to the public at a later date, the Journal said.
The newspaper also reported that Apple is currently in talks with major record companies to launch a far more ambitious service than either that offered by Amazon or the new service planned by Google.
Amazon unveiled a service in late March that allows users to store their digital music online and play it on a computer or an Android device.
With Cloud Drive and Cloud Player, users can upload digital music, photos, videos and documents to Amazon servers and access the files through Web browsers or phones and tablet computers running Google s Android software.
Music bought from Amazon.com or Apple s iTunes or from a personal collection is held in a digital "music locker" on the Internet and can be accessed from computers running Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Chrome Web browsers.

'MARS SPECTACULAR' E-MAIL HOAX IS BACK AGAIN.(Travel)
Byline: PETER LIPSCOMB
As with the return of the swallows to Capistrano, the evening bat flight at Carlsbad Caverns, and the regularity of the moon's phases, another predictable and recurrent event has permeated the realm of cyberspace.
Perhaps you have seen it.
It is the annual "Mars Spectacular" e-mail hoax.
While the e-mail content has several variations, all have a common origin.
Following the historic opposition of Mars when the red planet came within 35 million miles of Earth on Aug. 27, 2003, a chronicle of the event was created and re-packaged with the date omitted.
First circulated in 2004, the oft-titled "Mars Spectacular" e-mail makes several extravagant and inaccurate claims.
Mars comes to opposition with Earth every 26 months or so, when both planets reach the same side in their orbit around the sun.
So, it's impossible for Mars to be at opposition every year on Aug. 27.
Another factoid states that Mars will appear as large as the full moon.
Whoa -- let's get a grip here.
The moon's average distance is around 238,000 miles.
The average distance between Earth and Mars is
140 million miles.
The only way that Mars could be seen the same size as a full moon would be if it were just half a million miles away.
If Mars ever did loom that large in the night sky, then something would be terribly wrong in our solar system.
The "Mars Spectacular" e-mail has been forwarded to me from many parts of the world, including well-meaning friends and family.
Over the years, it has morphed from a simple piece of misinformation into a full-fledged viral campaign complete with a flash-animated version that could be straight out of Universal Studios.
The fuzzy line between news and entertainment makes the World Wide Web something of a double-edged sword.
On one hand, we have easy access to late-breaking stories like the recent scarring of Jupiter's atmosphere by the second impact in just a year, or images of the July 11 total solar eclipse visible in parts of the South Pacific.
But the Internet also provides a ready platform for anybody to publish anything without the burden of factual oversight.
Last year, NASA made a release of images taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter that document Apollo landing sites.
Now, I might be too optimistic to expect that pictures showing lunar descent stages, scientific instruments and astronaut footprints will quiet those who believe the landings were staged on a Hollywood back lot.
But even though there is good fun to be had, I am hopeful that eventually we will get back on track regarding scientific fact versus fiction.
Maybe one day the "Mars Spectacular" e-mail will live up to its promise that "no one alive today will ever see this again" and fade into obscurity.
But for now, I'm not going to hold my breath.

Alcatel-Lucent announces new integrated optoelectronics sources andreceiver at ECOC 2007.
M2 PRESSWIRE-19 September 2007-Alcatel-Lucent: Alcatel-Lucent announces new integrated optoelectronics sources andreceiver at ECOC 2007(C)1994-2007 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:19092007
Berlin -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced new breakthroughs in optical networks with three post-deadline papers accepted at the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Berlin. Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs and R&I researchers successfully demonstrated new advances in optical transmission with novel integrated optoelectronics sources and receiver.
On the receiver side, Alcatel-Lucent researchers in Bell Labs' Crawford Hill, NJ facility demonstrated a novel compact optoelectronic receiver for differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) reception that may ultimately contribute to reducing the cost and size of high-data-rate advanced-modulation-format optical transceivers. In contrast to the current generation of receiver technologies where multiple components must be connected together with precise path lengths in order to support advanced modulations formats, this technology integrates an optical demodulator and four photodiodes on a single 3.2 mm x 0.8 mm InP (Indium Phosphide)-based chip - producing a single integrated optoelectronic device that has a footprint that is more than two orders of magnitude smaller than today's typical DQPSK receivers.
On the emitter side, Alcatel-Lucent's researchers from Alcatel-Thales III-V lab, France, have demonstrated the first integrated version of a laser and an electro-absorption modulator (EML) with a record bandwidth of 60 GHz. This result is a major step toward the next generation 100Gb/s source for Very Short Reach (VSR) transmission. In addition, this is also a potential low cost approach since we have also demonstrated its high operating temperature capability (43 Gb/s up to 70degC, IPRM'07) Finally, Alcatel-Lucent's researchers from Alcatel-Thales III-V lab, France, have realized a 42 GHz mode-locked laser source with a record wavelength tunability of 16nm, keeping constant both the output power and the narrow pulse width of 2 picoseconds. These performances have been reached thanks to a new active layer made of Quantum Dots. In addition, the optical pulses are Fourier-transform limited, which is quite suitable for propagation in the fiber : these features make such a laser very attractive for very high bit rate tunable optical transmission.

Lorus Therapeutics' intellectual property portfolio strengthened by allowance of a European patent to protect a class of anticancer agents; TSX: LOR OTC BB: LORFF.
Lorus Therapeutics Inc. ('Lorus') announced today that one of its subsidiaries, NuChem Pharmaceuticals Inc., through an exclusive license with Harvard University, has been allowed a patent by the European Patent Office. This patent protects the company's intellectual property interests with regard to certain molecules that inhibit cancer progression characterized by abnormal vascularization.
"The protection of our interests in these novel molecules in the European market is essential in a global industry such as ours," said Dr. Jim Wright, chief executive officer, Lorus. "This patent strengthens Lorus' growing intellectual patent portfolio, and complements the company's immunotherapy, antisense, tumor suppressor and U-Sense approaches for designing new anticancer drugs, all of which have recently received patent allowances in major markets."
The patent, entitled "Use of Imidazole for the Treatment of Diseases Characterized by Neovascularization," protects the use of specific small molecules in a class of compounds called imidazoles for the treatment of angiogenic conditions where neovascularization (new blood vessel formation) contributes to the progression of the disease by supplying nourishment to the diseased area. The molecules described in this patent inhibit the growth of cells responsible for neovascularization.
The invention outlines solid tumors potentially treatable with the molecules described in the patent. For example, they include cancers of the brain, breast, cervix, colon, liver, lung, ovary, pancreas, muscle, skin, testicles, thyroid and kidney.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 2003
Dell (Nasdaq:DELL) plans to support Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 by helping customers deploy early versions of the messaging software on Dell PowerEdge(tm) servers, the company announced today.
Graphic Packaging International Corp., North America's leading folding carton packaging supplier, has deployed Exchange Server 2003 on Dell servers as part of the Microsoft Exchange Joint Development Program.
"Our employees need 24x7 access to their e-mail, and the scalability of Microsoft Exchange 2003 ensures that this vital business tool is available when we need it," said Joan Little, CIO of Graphic Packaging headquartered in Golden, Colo. "We are participating with Dell and Microsoft in the early deployment program and have found in test environments that Exchange 2003 can support a significant increase in number of users while offering the manageability that our IT staff demands."
Industry analyst firm Gartner Inc. predicts that the volume of daily e-mails sent worldwide will reach 36 billion by 2005 -- more than three times the number of e-mails sent in 2001(a). As the volume of e-mail increases rapidly, Dell has enabled companies to decrease IT costs by as much as 20 percent and support six times as many users by helping them consolidate e-mail applications on standards-based Dell servers.
Linda Hargrove, vice president of worldwide enterprise systems marketing and product management for Dell, said customers increasingly trust Dell to power their transaction-intensive applications. "Because we ship well over 50 percent of our messaging servers into Exchange environments, customers benefit directly from our experience in helping them build a standards-based, highly reliable infrastructure that can expand to support their growing e-mail requirements," she said.
In addition, Microsoft is training its Exchange Server 2003 professional services consultants on Dell servers, storage and networking systems. Dell will offer Exchange Server 2003 on its entire line of PowerEdge servers later this year to coincide with general availability from Microsoft.
